About MUA
Manipulation under anesthesia is a non invasive procedure. It is considered safe for problems in the neck, back, hip, shoulders, hands and feet.
Licensed Doctors who have specialized training specifically for this procedure perform the treatment in a surgical center. I am on a surgical team and we use the ones in Plano, Frisco and Dallas. A team approach is required to ensure a safe and successful outcome.
The team includes the anesthesiologist, myself, a pain managment physician, another Doctor of Chiropractic, and the nursing staff who are trained in pre and post procedure protocols.
The combination of manipulation and anesthesia is not new. This treatment has been part of the medical arena for more than 80 years. Today other options are available as well. By working with a board certified pain managment doctor options such as epidural steriod injections (esi), facet injections, Botox to relax muscle spasm and injections to tighten loose ligaments is available and produces great longterm results.
Why Anesthesia?
The muscles can be in so much spasm that any movment is painful. The spasm may have just started or you may have had chronic pain and spasm for years. The anesthesia disrupts the muscle spasm to allow for increased movment. It also sedates the pain perceiving nerves that are irratated. Anesthesia allows complete muscle relaxation so that I can stretch shortened muscle groups and adhesions caused by scar tissue.
By having a team approach, the pain management specialist can add injections designed to reduce or eleminate spasm, swelling and pain. In chronic patients this can lead to comming off of addictive pain medications and giving you your life back. No small miracle for patients addicted topowerful pain medications.
